Alwin Nikolais was one of a handful of seminal, dance theater creators of the 20th Century.  He transformed the way audiences looked at dance from kinetic drama to total visual theater. It was at the Henry Street Settlement Playhouse located in the heart of the the Lower East Side of New York City that he nurtured and developed his ideas. I was lucky enough to join him there in 1967 just as the dance scene in America was exploding.

THe following link offers a through discussion of Alwin Nikolais hosted by Ruth Grauert, his life long Assistant http://bearnstowjournal.org/jai1a.htm
